Moving and Storage Under One Company

Closings rarely line up. You’re out of the old house on the 14th and into the new one on the 22nd, and everything you own needs somewhere to be in between. Or a renovation runs three weeks longer than promised. Or a house sells faster than anyone expected and the next one hasn’t been found yet.

Horsepower Moving and Storage handles both halves. We’re a family-owned Louisville moving and storage company, licensed and insured, registered with the FMCSA under USDOT 4474565, with background-checked crews. Storage isn’t a separate vendor you have to find and coordinate – it goes into your moving estimate, and the same company that loads your home holds your belongings and delivers them when you’re ready. Moving and Storage Estimated Together

In addition to the labor rate and truck fee on your move, we’ll estimate your storage according to whether you need a hold for several days or true storage for several months. In both cases we consider the volume of items being stored and give you a custom estimate. Climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled options are available.

Storage Protection - Wrapped or Unwrapped

Here’s the choice most people don’t know they have.

Your furniture is blanket-wrapped and protected when it leaves your house. When it goes into storage, you can either buy our moving blankets and leave everything wrapped for the entire time it’s stored, or we’ll unwrap it on the way in and re-wrap it when it comes back out.

  • Buy the blankets – costs more upfront, but nothing sits exposed for weeks or months. Best for longer storage or high-value furniture like leather, wood dining sets, and antiques
  • Unwrap on the way in – costs less. Usually fine for a short gap between closings, like two weeks

We’ll tell you which one we’d choose in your situation, and we’ll estimate both.

How to Prepare Your Belongings for Storage

A few things to handle before your belongings go in, whether the hold is two weeks or six months:

  • Clean and dry everything – moisture trapped inside a sealed unit leads to mold. Wipe down appliances, dry out coolers, and empty anything that held water
  • Drain fuel from powered equipment – mowers, trimmers, generators. Fuel is both a fire risk and a storage restriction
  • Empty the fridge and freezer completely – we can move them, but they need 24 hours unplugged before loading so condensation drains
  • Label boxes by room – when delivery day comes, labeled boxes go straight to the right room instead of being opened and sorted
  • Consider the blankets – see the wrapped vs unwrapped section above. For anything leather, wood, or upholstered going into storage for more than a few weeks, keeping the blankets on is worth it

Items We Can't Store

The same restrictions that apply to a move apply to storage, and some matter more when items are sitting for weeks rather than hours:

  • Flammables, fuels, propane tanks, aerosols, paint, and pool chemicals
  • Ammunition and explosives
  • Perishable food
  • Plants – they don’t do well in storage and we don’t recommend it

Before we arrive:

  • Disconnect washers and dryers – we move them but don’t connect or disconnect them, since faulty water lines cause floods
  • Drain and dry anything that’s been holding water

Storage Delivery and Reassembly

Delivery works like the outbound move in reverse. We bring everything to the new address, place furniture where you want it rather than in the middle of the room, set boxes down in the rooms they belong to, and reassemble whatever we took apart at no additional charge - beds done the same day so there's somewhere to sleep that night. If you kept the moving blankets on, they come off at the destination. Your crew chief walks you through the itemized Bill of Lading before leaving, and payment is due at completion by cash, check, or tap-to-pay card, with a 3% service charge on cards that cash and check avoid.

Storage Pricing and Estimates

Yes, and it's the most common reason people use us for storage. We load out the old house, hold everything, and deliver when the new place is ready - one estimate, one crew, one company accountable for your furniture the whole time it's out of your hands.

Storage is priced on top of your move's labor and truck fee. We price it by how much you're storing and for how long, from a few days to several months, and give you a custom estimate.

Both climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled options are available. Which one makes sense depends on how long your things are stored and what's going in - Louisville summers are humid, and that's harder on upholstery, mattresses, books and anything wooden than a short hold would be.

Your call, and we'll estimate both. Buying the blankets costs more upfront and means nothing sits exposed for weeks or months. Unwrapping costs less. For a two-week gap between closings, unwrapping is usually fine. For a six-month storage period with a leather sectional or a dining table you care about, the blankets are worth it. We'll tell you which one we'd choose in your situation.

Tell us what you need at your estimate. If the day involves a stop at storage and then a stop at the house, the routing varies each time, so those moves are estimated separately from the flat truck fee.

Not once the load-out is done. Your crew chief walks you through the itemized Bill of Lading at the end of the loading day, which is your receipt, and we handle the rest until you're ready for delivery.
