What Actually Drives the Cost of an Apartment Move
Labor is billed hourly with a two-hour minimum, and the clock starts when the crew arrives at your door, not when they leave our yard. For a small apartment, the minimum is often close to the whole job.
When you request an estimate, have these ready – they’re what actually drives the number:
- Floor number and whether there’s an elevator
- Carry distance from the truck to your entrance
- Staircase width and whether the landings turn
- Building rules – move-in hours, loading zone limits, required paperwork

How Your Floor Number Affects Your Apartment Move
The same furniture takes longer to move from the third floor than from the first. On an hourly rate, that difference shows up directly on your bill. Here is roughly what to expect:
- Ground floor or elevator building – the fastest scenario. Carry distance from the unit to the truck is the main variable
- Second floor walk-up – one flight adds time on every trip, but landings are usually wide enough to work without disassembly
- Third floor walk-up and above – multiple flights compound the time per trip. Tight landings usually mean furniture comes apart on the staircase rather than in the unit
- High-rise with elevator – elevator wait times and reservation windows replace stair time. Faster per trip, but shared elevators during peak hours add idle time the crew can’t control
Tell us the floor, the staircase, and whether there’s an elevator when you request your estimate. That single detail is the difference between an estimate that holds and one that doesn’t.
Apartment Walk-Ups, Tight Turns, and Narrow Stairways
This is routine work for us, not a problem to solve on the day. Narrow stairwells, awkward landings, and doorframes with no clearance to spare come up constantly in older Louisville buildings, and the answer is almost always disassembly rather than force.
Furniture disassembly and reassembly is included at no additional fee. Beds come apart and go back together the same day. Mattresses and box springs go into mattress bags so they aren’t dragged through a stairwell. Flat-screen televisions get wrapped.

Labor-Only Apartment Loading and Unloading
Not every apartment move needs a full-service crew and a 26-foot truck.
If you’ve already rented a U-Haul, booked a PODS container, or have a truck of your own and need the heavy lifting done, we offer labor-only loading and unloading. It’s priced hourly with a flat travel fee – same crews, same equipment, without the full-service package. Loading a truck properly is what protects your furniture most in transit, and it’s the part people most often get wrong.
There’s no limit on box count or total weight for a full-service move either. It only has to fit our trucks, which are all 26 feet long, measuring 7 feet 9 inches wide and 6 feet 10 inches high inside, and have a liftgate or a ramp.
Moving From One Apartment to Another
An apartment-to-apartment move doubles the access logistics. There are building rules at the origin and building rules at the destination, and they rarely match.
- Move-out hours at your current building may not overlap with move-in hours at the new one
- Both buildings may require elevator reservations, and the windows may conflict
- One or both management offices may require a Certificate of Insurance from the moving company
- Loading zones at the new building may be first-come, first-served rather than reserved
Give us both addresses at your estimate. We’ll check the rules at each building and plan the day so we aren’t waiting for access at either end. If the move-out and move-in windows don’t align, we can hold your belongings in storage overnight and deliver the next day.
