A senior move is rarely just a move. It’s usually a decision about a house someone has lived in for thirty or forty years, made under time pressure, often coordinated by adult children who live in another state and are trying to organize it over the phone.

For most moves an on-site walkthrough is a recommendation. For a senior move it’s the single most useful hour of the whole process, and it’s free.
A long-occupied house almost always holds more than anyone estimates over the phone. The attic, the basement, the garage, the outbuildings, the closets nobody has opened in years – that’s where a move goes over its estimate. On-site walkthroughs are available on request, and for a senior move we recommend one regardless of size – and especially for a storage move it’s worth doing regardless – knowing the volume before we estimate is how we avoid discovering on the day that it won’t fit.
For scale: one 26-foot truck holds roughly 1,600 square feet of normally furnished living space. A four-bedroom house that’s been lived in for decades is frequently a two-truck job, and knowing that in advance changes the plan rather than the bill. When a move takes two or more trucks, we pack the day before instead of compressing everything into one day.

Downsizing - What Happens to What Doesn't Fit
Downsizing means most of the house isn’t going to the new place. Usually it splits three ways, and we can handle all three in one day:
- To the new residence
- To family members at a separate address
- Into storage while decisions get made
Multi-stop moves are estimated separately from the flat truck fee, so ask about it at your estimate. Storage is handled in-house and built into your moving estimate rather than sent to a third party – useful when there’s a gap between selling the house and settling the family’s share.
Senior Moving - Heirlooms and Honest Limits
The things that matter most in a house like this are usually the oldest.
We offer replacement-value protection options on every move, and we go through them with you in writing before you book. Furniture is wrapped before it leaves the room, mattresses go into bags, flat-screens are wrapped and boxed, and where a piece won’t clear a turn we disassemble it – including taking a banister off, which our crews do regularly enough that it isn’t an event.
Some specifics, because they come up constantly in senior moves:
- Upright pianos – yes, as part of a household move
- Grand and baby grand pianos – no. For those we’ll point you to Gist Piano Center
- Grandfather clocks – no. They need a specialist
- Safes between 300 and 500 pounds – at least three movers on site
- Sheds and saunas – no

Moving Into a Senior Living Community
Communities have rules, and they’re usually stricter than an apartment building’s. Tell us the community at your estimate and we handle the coordination before the date:
- Designated move-in days and permitted hours confirmed
- Elevator reservations booked
- Loading zones reserved for your time slot
- Management offices notified and any required paperwork filed
Arrival windows are morning, 8-9am, or afternoon, 12-4pm – worth knowing if the community only permits moves during set hours.
We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice and recommend booking two weeks out. If you need an earlier date than we can offer, we keep a cancellation list.
